Character
Education: At Harp Elementary, we define character as you are what you do and what you say everyday in every way. The teachers, parents, and staff lead the way in this endeavor with a positive atmosphere. Character is integrated in every aspect from the displays, discipline, morning announcements, journals, quotes, literature, classroom guidance, and meetings. We focus on a character word a month, the students who are caught representing this character word are celebrated in a monthly character assembly. We express to the children that we don't leave character in the assembly; we strive to develop character through positive everyday endeavors. As parents, the best way you can reinforce the importance of character is by setting a good example. Children learn more by example than by the things that we say to them. One example would be to try to show responsibility by making sure students are at school and ready to learn on time. When you see or hear about someone doing the right thing and not necessarily the easy thing, try to point it out using the character word. Read with them about heroes and discuss what character traits they have. This year, you will probably hear about the 3% club. This summer at a character education conference, I heard the fact that only 3% of the people who were surveyed set and wrote their goals down. It makes sense that these people were much more likely to reach their goals. I made it my goal and yes, I am writing it down, to help each child (K-5) to learn how to set goals, write them down, try to achieve them and celebrate when you do. You can support this by asking your child their goals, telling them about times you have set goals and how you felt when you reached them. We are so truly impressed with our kind, compassionate and caring Harp Hawks. I also appreciate that our parents were their first teachers. Thank you for doing such a great job in giving them a wonderful nurturing start and it is our belief that we will only enhance your efforts. Thank you for all that you do! Sincerely, Robin Points, Our School Counselor |
